I have followed the Sandusky case. Not in exquisite legal detail, but just checking in on the phenomena of people getting away with shit because they were strategically safe.

I grew up near Notre Dame, where the level of grovelling to footbal culture is probably typical, but it infused the entire society. Public funds were poured into it. The entire service economy was dependent on it. When a group of "them" arrive somewhere, anywhere, they are accommodated like kings.

Syria fries Turkish Jet Fighter (0.00 / 0)
(Reuters) - The Turkish and Syrian navies conducted a joint search on Saturday for Turkish airmen shot down by Syria over the Mediterranean, only a short distance from a Turkish province hosting thousands of rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

Signals from both sides suggested neither wanted a military confrontation over Friday's shooting down of the jet near their borders. However, the joint operation will clearly sit uneasily with both forces, given the bitter hostility between the two former allies over Assad's 16-month-old crackdown on opponents.

Iraq, which borders both countries, said the incident marked a serious escalation of the Syrian conflict and demonstrated its potential to infect other countries in the region.

"No country is immune from this spillover because of the composition of the societies, the extensions, the connections, the sectarian, ethnic dimensions," Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said in Baghdad. "This is not an excuse to do nothing about Syria, no. But there will be an impact."

Turkey has declared it will respond decisively.

"It is not possible to cover over a thing like this. Whatever is necessary will no doubt be done," Turkish President Abdullah Gul told reporters, adding that Ankara had been in telephone contact with Syrian authorities.

The incident, whatever its causes, showcased Syria's Russian-supplied air defences - one of the many reasons Western powers are loathe to intervene to halt bloodshed in the country.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Turkey and Syria to handle the matter with restraint, using diplomatic channels.

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the downed jet was a reconnaissance aircraft. Turkish media had said it was an F-4 Phantom, a fighter also used for reconnaissance.

According to a Syrian military account, the Turkish plane was flying fast and low, just one kilometre off the Syrian coast when it was shot down. It had been tracked at first as an unidentified aircraft and its Turkish origin established subsequently.

"The navies of the two countries have established contact. Syrian naval vessels are participating along with the Turkish side in the search operation for the missing pilots," it said.

With the second biggest army in NATO, a force hardened by nearly 30 years of fighting Kurdish rebels, Turkey would be a formidable foe for a Syrian military already struggling to put down a popular uprising and an increasingly potent insurgency.

A civil war, or something closely resembling one, is already in full swing in Syria, where fighting or shelling engulfed parts of the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Deir al-Zor and Douma, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"PLAYING WITH FIRE"

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met Turkey's military commanders and intelligence chief to discuss the search for the pilots and Ankara's next steps.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was to hold a second security meeting with senior officials later in the day, less than 24 hours after he convened a crisis session on Friday evening.

"Turkey will present its final stance after the incident has been fully brought to light and decisively take the necessary steps," Erdogan's office said after the first meeting.

Turkish newspapers were less restrained.

"They (the Syrians) will pay the price," said Vatan, while Hurriyet daily said: "He (Assad) is playing with fire."

Turkish media at first reported Erdogan on Friday as saying Syria had apologised, but the Prime Minister later said he could not confirm receiving such an apology.

ISTANBUL - Turkey's foreign minister said Sunday that his country would hold emergency talks with NATO in the next few days over the downing of one of its jet fighters by Syria, asserting that the plane was shot down in international airspace.

"Next week, Permanent Council of NATO will be informed," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a Twitter message posted from his official account on Sunday. In another posting on Sunday, he said that Turkey, a NATO member, would invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which provides for consultations by the allies when one is attacked or threatened. He did not cite the much stronger Article 5, in which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all NATO countries and obliges a concerted response.

Mr. Davutoglu posted the messages after he told state-owned TRT TV that the Turkish authorities' analysis of radar, visual and communications data had confirmed that their aircraft was struck by Syrian antiaircraft weapons outside of Syrian airspace. "Our plane was hit in international airspace, 13 nautical miles out of Syria, when Syrian territorial space is 12 miles," he said.

He said that the Turkish investigation had left no doubt that the aircraft, a two-seat F-4 Phantom, had briefly strayed over Syria but had been shot down after leaving its territory.

The television network reported that the aircraft's wreckage and its ejections seats had been found on Sunday off the Syrian coast in 3,200 feet to 9,800 feet of water. The search continued for the crewmen, the report said.

In Brussels, the NATO spokeswoman, Oanu Lungescu, told Turkey's Anatolia News Agency that the allies would meet on Tuesday to discuss the downing of its jet.

Syria has said it shot down the plane because it was flying low into its airspace and appeared to have hostile intentions. "It was an accident, certainly not an attack," the Syrian foreign minister, Jihad Makdissi, told the Turkish news channel A Haber on Saturday.

Mr. Davutoglu said the Turkish jet was on a training exercise. He said the aircraft was flying alone, without weapons, and that the Syrian authorities had made no attempt to contact it. When the Turkish authorities realized it had strayed into Syrian airspace, the pilots were warned to leave and did so immediately, Mr. Davutoglu said. Minutes later, the Syrians fired on the plane, he said.

Turkey had not yet decided what action to take, the foreign minister said.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey met with his military chiefs on Saturday, his third crisis meeting since the downing of the jet on Friday, and he convened a discussion with leaders of the Turkish opposition parties on Sunday. Mr. Erdogan has so far been circumspect in his response to the episode.

On Sunday, however, Mr. Davutoglu's Twitter feed suggested a hardening of Turkey's stance toward Syria.

"No one should try to test the capacity of Turkey," he wrote. "Turkey has never acted alone concerning Syria. Has always been part of regional and intl initiatives." He added that Turkey had discussed the matter with Russian and Chinese officials, who praised its "calm approach."

Turkey says Syria fired on one of its airplanes that was taking part in a search-and-rescue operation for a warplane shot down by Syrian forces last week.

News agencies quoted an unnamed official at Turkey's Foreign Ministry as saying on June 25 that the plane was fired at - but not brought down - and "was forced to return to base."

The official said Turkey immediately informed Syria that its forces were attacking a rescue operation.

Earlier, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Syria's "hostile action" would "not go unpunished."

Arinc, however, said Turkey had no intention of "going to war with anyone."

NATO will discuss the downing of the Turkish jet on June 26 in a meeting called by Turkey, which is a member state.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc's announcement Monday came on the eve of a meeting by NATO's governing body to discuss the incident.

The Turkish government says the unarmed RF-4E reconnaissance jet was shot down a mile (1.6 kilometers) inside international airspace on Friday.

Arinc says Turkey will push NATO to consider the armed attack under article 5 in a key alliance treaty. Article 5 states that an attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members.

Despite frustration among many NATO countries over the Syrian regime's crackdown on an increasingly armed popular uprising, it's unlikely NATO will take armed action against the Arab state.

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt will release results from disputed presidential elections Sunday, the country's top elections commission official said - an announcement that will put an end to the country's nerve-wracking uncertainty about who is the official winner, but promises no end to the power struggles between Islamists, the military and other factions.

A gathering of secular-leaning politicians criticized on Saturday what they said was US meddling on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has claimed victory. Other secularists have stood behind the Islamist group, calling it the likely legitimate winner and the best hope in the current circumstances against continued military domination of the country.

The dispute highlights how the country has been split into deeply polarized camps since the June 16-17 runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, with both campaigns claiming victory by a narrow margin.

Many Egyptians have rallied behind Morsi as a chance to finally rid the country of the old Mubarak regime, while others support Shafiq as the best bet to counter Islamists and restore order after a year of protests, economic hardship, and fear about crime and continued instability.

But there is little hope that the results will lead to an end to 16 months of political turmoil. A Morsi victory will likely see the new civilian government fight for its authority against a military that has ensured its powers persist past the transition. A Shafiq victory will be seen by large sections of the public as illegitimate, as he is perceived as the favored candidate of the military rulers that appointed the election commission.

The commission postponed official results that had been scheduled to be announced on Thursday, leading to speculation that the military rulers are using the results as a bargaining chip in backroom negotiations with the Brotherhood about post-election division of powers.

In addition to a Morsi or Shafiq victory, a third possibility is that Egypt remains in political limbo: The elections commission may decide to annul the runoff vote and call for new elections in some or all constituencies due to allegations of irregularities by both sides.

Itz hard to predict the outcome, but itz obvious the military does not want a mubro president. The safest course they could take is to annul the election. They don't need a puppet president, they already pull all or most of the strings of state power, so why should they declare Shafiq the winner when riots will likely follow. But if they do declare Morsi the winner you can bet he'll have very limited power.

Notably, we hosted ErrinF (also footnoted in your academic piece) who wrote the epic Delete My Fucking Account Now, Kos! that ran 1700 comments the most at DKOS to that point. He came over and joined us at Nowhere for a spell in the threads (he claimed he was a musician and not really a political blogger and decided against making it a hobby). Brian and a few cohorts were among the earliest and severest of MAMZ critics and when Errin F came over along came some hackers who announced themselves and promptly took down the site. Teice.

Brian had created his own software, which apparently had a few securtity flaws. Fun times. That site whitewalled after I suicided my acct.

I agree with you on the general rule. The problem with it, of course, is that it doesn't have room in it for -- you don't think there are -- many exceptions to the rule. There are lots of decent and authentic leftists in the U.S. How they manage, I don't know exactly, but they do.

But just to give some examples: if you're an employee with a strong union supporting you, and don't want to move up into management, then you can comfortably be a leftist, no problem. So that's a few million people. If you're a tenured professor and are willing to accept second-class citizenship within academia, you can be an authentic leftist. That's a few, maybe ten or twenty, thousand more.

If you mean that most people today can't be out and out left for our own salvation because we will get fired unless we are lucky enough to be employed in traditional left-leaning institutional positions, OK. I wrote a mea culpa at DFQ2 in the comments as a response. There seems to be a decent chance this whole fucker has been a hoax. I've got to read the audio report. One of Ron's few supporters says the audio specialist concluded he wasn't the caller. Ugh, it's all very confusing. Also, it'd be nice to get the audio for the January hearing. Apparently Aaron was acting crazy. I've a copy of his nutty 200 page motion. What competent lawyer would have written so much for something so simple? He wasn't even my lawyer. He couldn't legally defend me even if he was legit and doing the right thing pro bono. It's not passing the smell test how Aaron got involved. It feels like I got punked by the Breibart crowd.

I dont think the audio specialist or his report has any meaning whatsoever, to be honest.

I blogged about that on MyFDL, wrt the audio stress test the cops gave to Zimmerman.

Those are different than Voice recognition, they are tryint to determine from the stress in the voice whether the person is lying or not and most experts say not only does stress not necessarily equal a lie, but scientific studies have shown the reliability of audio stress tests are 50-50!

IOW, you might as well flip a coin. Just as with the question of whodunit. 50-50.

As for the VRA of Brynaert, my extensive research shows that its only scientifically validated when you test the alleged perp's voice against a large random sample of voices, which is complicated, expensive and time consuming.

That is the key. I doubt very much the Brynaert audio comaprison was extensive enough to be considered scientifically valid to hold any meaning whatsoever, legal or otherwise. Most, maybe all courts are very skeptically of VRA in any event.

Which is why its only value to Patterico was to pimp his schtick, while being completely ignored by the authorities.
