Why no openly gay U.S. heroes killing Afghan peasants?!

Why are there no openly gay U.S. heroes killing Afghan peasants?! We need to allow all gay women and men, whether openly or non-openly, the opportunity to heroically kill Afghan peasants evilly attempting to oust us from their country. If given a chance to die as an openly gay U.S. heroic Afghan peasant killer, our openly gay U.S. hero would return to a hero's funeral, where openly and non-openly gay people and non-gay people too could gather to praise the brave service to country provided by an openly gay and now dead American hero.

I like this satire. (0.00 / 0)
And, too, I admit I wish more people thought of it this way.

Well, as satire at least, I mean.

I've said much the same with no trace of satire. (4.33 / 3)
What is the point in getting the equal right to be a butchering baby killer?  it's retarded.  I've said before and will again: if you want equality in the armed services make it so the heterosexuals can't join up either.

Do you hate the US heroes (0.00 / 0)
who killed German peasants and workers, many of them conscripts to the German Army, in WWII?  The US heroes who bombed Germany, killing many women and children?

Am I drawing a moral equivalence between the Taliban and the Nazis?  Absolutely.

If we withdraw from Afghanistan, and the Taliban restore their brutal, misogynistic regime, harboring their terrorist friends, what will you say?  "Tough, that's not our problem."?  If "Af-Pak" descends into a nuclear-armed theocratic horror, what will your position be?  "Tsk, Tsk".?

These are not rhetorical questions.

Same argument against 'coming home' from Vietnam (5.00 / 1)
If your thinking had prevailed we'd still be there killing Vietnamese peasants who just want us to leave.

I trust the Afghans, if foreign interference is greatly diminished, will find their way to a traditional but not obscenely traditional sort of society. And then when they've gotten that out of their system, to a social-democratic utopia.

Do you find being a dumbass (5.00 / 2)
gets you a lot of play on other boards?  I imagine it probably does.  Around here I suggest you try to pretend to be smarter -- like Virginia we execute the mentally retarded.

Your questions are indeed rhetorical but the rhetorical trick your employing is designed to work on morons and on boards where anyone who isn't a moron is banned.

Obscenely traditional? (4.00 / 1)
That's good.  I'll have to remember that.

I was talking to Vox.  I have some respect for him.

I understand his anguish for the victims of predator drones.  I just don't understand his lack of any concern for aid workers who are executed, or an Afghan girl who has acid thrown into her face for wanting to go to school, or for resisting being sold into a forced "marriage".

I am not supporting the Afghanistan war. We may be doomed to lose it.  I just have a problem with people who think this situation is so obviously, simplistically simple.

If you had the power to decide what the U.S. does here, would you be willing to live with the consequences?

Withdraw immediately and permanently (4.50 / 2)
Destroy our 'making war in distant lands' capability, so wary Afghans and the rest of the world knows that 'permanent' means permanent. Put a severe economic blockade on any country (hear that, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia!?) that continues to interfere in Afghanistan's internal affairs.

The first casualty of war is the truth, and there's been permanent war in Afghanistan, sponsored by the U.S. and/or Pakistan, for several decades now. So, take your notion that throwing acid in girls' faces is official Taliban policy and examine how confident you are of that factoid.

In any case, the lunatic Taliban was a product of the U.S., Saudi Arabia (another U.S. ally we easily corral when/if we want to), and Pakistan. It has largely dissolved much of its extremism into -- or been absorbed into -- the wide populist/nationalist resistance in the ten years of resistance to U.S./Euro war and occupation.

Wow. gzodik, I just saw your comment (5.00 / 1)
string and was getting ready to respond when I saw this comment by fairleft.  I think this is a good place to start.

Please don't confuse my sympathy with the losses of any one group with a lack of sympathy of any other.

My concern I hope will always be: how can we best prevent the most future losses on all sides?

The tragic truth I have to face when asking that question - as do all others who dare ask it - is that I cannot ever know that my personal answer is in fact the best, and in fact that my best intentions might end up being harmful in the long run.

Ironically, it is that very doubt that keeps me going.  If I felt that I alone had the answer and was a misunderstood, tortured genius of peace, I could die a saint in my own mind and be done with it... I could be at peace, even as I knew that the world was not at rest.

Meanwhile, in the real world, I add my voice and ideas and rely on human history to discern to what extent I was useful in any way.  We will all be praised or condemned for our lack of knowing that which we could have or might have discerned but never saw.  Thus was it ever, and it is best to accept it from the start.

But, to return to your original question:  No, I don't hate any of them... or at least I try not to.  Getting out of the legacy of past hatreds and injustices is the only way we will ever move forward.  But how nice for me to type in this forum, no?

Still, I believe it with all my heart and - dare I say it - with all my soul.  Were I pushed to the test,  I pray that I might be worthy of that which I know to be true.

And that will have to be enough for now.

So, (0.00 / 0)
A U.S. war in a distant land will be bad?  Well, that certainly seems the way to bet.

I don't know if the Taliban has an official policy, but if they do, subjugation of women is at the top of the list.

Maybe the best deal we could hope for with the Taliban is:  they turn over Al Qaida to us, and we turn over the Afghan people to them.  "Not our problem", is that your motto?

And then, afterward, if they continue their "war in distant lands" against us, what do we do?  The only politically possible response is, we blow them to bits.  Note to all countries:  we will leave you alone.  But if you fuck with us, we will turn your country into a radioactive slag heap.  The road to peace in the nuclear age.

Not saying that you're wrong about Afghanistan, just depressed that all outcomes are unacceptable.  I guess your suggestion is a cheap one, at least.  Certainly, that's an important consideration.

"We may be doomed to lose it." (0.00 / 0)
Who's this 'we' kimosabe?

Subjugation of women is near the top of the list for our allies the Saudis, UAEs, Omanis, Kuwaitis, and even the present govt of Afghanistan. It has nothing to do with why the U.S. has been violently occupying Afghanistan for now 9 years. Don't believe the window-dressing.

Afghanistan is Afghans' problem. How they deal with their country, should they ever be allowed to have it, will certainly surprise you and me. And I say it is none of U.S. official business unless they start an authentic (not trumped up) genocide. But as an individual or part of a like-minded group, feel free to boycott all countries that subjugate women, rather than doing not a damn thing about all except one of them, and then for that one occupying it and killing thousands of its citizens, resistance fighters and civilians probly not much distinguished.
