Obama okays assassinations of U.S. citizens, so STFU!?

(H/t to Stu Piddy.) Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair on Wednesday confirmed that President Obama can and does authorize assassinations of U.S. citizens, if those citizens are overseas. Are we all OK with this? Why no protest from progressive leaders within the Democratic Party? Progressives, leaders, within the Democratic Party? How can anyone still sane and moral in this country not agree with Glenn Greenwald (emphasis added):

Barack Obama, like George Bush before him, has claimed the authority to order American citizens murdered based solely on the unverified, uncharged, unchecked claim that they are associated with Terrorism and pose "a continuing and imminent threat to U.S. persons and interests." They're entitled to no charges, no trial, no ability to contest the accusations. Amazingly, the Bush administration's policy of merely imprisoning foreign nationals (along with a couple of American citizens) without charges -- based solely on the President's claim that they were Terrorists -- produced intense controversy for years.  That, one will recall, was a grave assault on the Constitution. Shouldn't Obama's policy of ordering American citizens assassinated without any due process or checks of any kind -- not imprisoned, but killed -- produce at least as much controversy?

And yet, the fact is, there is complete silence, by Democrats, Republicans, and the mainstream media (in fact the first exposure of the policy was buried deep inside an article on something else). Well, not complete silence. Apparently one representative at that Blair Congressional hearing, embarrassing as it is for Democrats a Republican, Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), sort of maybe 'criticized' the 'Citizen Assassinations ROK' policy, specifically over CIA involvement in the 2001 assassination of Christian missionaries (mistaken for drug exporters) in Peru:

"The targeting of Americans -- it's a very sensitive issue, but again there's been more information in the public domain than what has been shared with this committee. There is no clarity...what is the legal framework?"

To explain Hoekstra's concern dismissively, apparently FOX is going large on the wholesome, white Christian Bowers family, and how tragic it was that two of them were assassinated (*and it certainly was*), but of course the general policy of assassinations, well, FOX hit show '24' okays that if 'swarthy' actors play the bad guys.

I won't recap the case Glenn Greenwald has ably presented, the argument (obviously true) that assassinations of U.S. citizens, whether at home or abroad, solely on the President's authority violates U.S. law, the Constitution, international law, and just about everything legally progressive since 1215.

My focus is on the lack of any discernable left or progressive concrete reaction to this revelation. Uh, is there any place I can go on the net that is organizing protests, even civil disobedience against, this policy's people and symbols? What does it say about us and our 'democracy' that the answer is 'NO, not really'?

P.S. & BTW -- Jonathan Turley asks a couple of good questions:

If a president can kill U.S. citizens abroad, why not within the United States? What is the limiting principle beyond the practicalities?

Answers: Why not? There ain't one.

This shit is over at Daily Kos, where . . . (0.00 / 0)
"Assassination of U.S. citizens just on Pres. Obama's okay is basically fine by me." so far has a third of votes in my little poll.

Holding steady at 25% . . . (0.00 / 0)
It's apparently a raging 'controversy' in elect more Dems land. 'A Dem is doing it, Dems are great (except LIEberman), so it must be okay, but still . . .'

Americans... Prefer Madness to Sanity (5.00 / 1)
It means very simply, that the American people are disturbed. They are unable to percieve reality.

I'm in a group and we play a song called Brigas Nunca Mais which means War No More...and I always say this next song is called War no More and that's what were hopin' for"....I can tell you that everytime all eyes simply become glazed. There is no response, there is a dead uncomfortable silence. The fact that the comment that no more war is made is pretty innocent, it's not even political...but it stuns everyone ...every single time because no one has developed a point of view. They are in a state of uncertainty. They freeze. They don't know how to respond.

Everyone has been made "confused". They are bringing the troops home, they are sending more troops, they are bringing the troops home.....how often have we heard that....for years this has been going on, These statements about the troops are made simultaneously.

And places like Daily Kos or Daily Gloss...where a the owner is deeply involved with the CIA are perfect places for the development of this kind of confusion.

There is nothing confusing about a person like Markos Moulitsas. He's a confused person who cannot be trusted and doesnn't understand ...."THINGS".

Confusion reigns....and it's not for lack of brain cells or education...it's because it's easier to feel confused than not to.

No one takes a position. It's safer and no thinking or risk is required.

Confusion is really just being indulgent and lazy.

It's all there for everyone to see ....and therefore if you want to "see" it you can predict where it's going.

I am not a piano player (0.00 / 0)
I don't play the piano. I am an artist. I make my own beats. I am perhaps the greatest living mobile DJ in the world right now.  I have the talent to motivate diverse groups of people to get up and have fun. In addition to good organizational skills, incredible vocal talent as a master of ceremonies (MC or emcee), and mixing skills, I as, a mobile disc jockey also have the expertise and experience to assume the additional responsibilities of an event organizer, lighting director, or sound engineer.

My craft is my life. My name is, DJ Vernacular.

Look me up.

Glenn Greenwald seems to have gone (0.00 / 0)
from having a reality problem on the issue to being the one every sane and moral person should agree with (according to your use of a rhetorical question I might add) in just a few short hours.

His argument look a lot different when you aren't cherry picking and actually read everything he has to say, huh?

He's both; denial of the pit we're in leads to useless whining (0.00 / 0)
But the whine is righteous, he's exactly right about how wrong assassination by the state is, but talking about what the fight to do things right is up against, a post-democratic society, is also an essential thing a good left pundit should be dealing with in writing.

Assassination as an Art Form. Assassins are artists. They wear rings in their ears and look mysterious (0.00 / 0)
I think Seymour Hersh tried to bring this assassination team stuff before.

It was suggested that perhaps Bhutto had been killed by the squads.

http://www.nation.com.pk/pakis...

THere are several things going on here:

1). Is the assumption that Americans are somehow better than other people and therefore, we ought to be careful about assassinating our own...(see how crazy this is getting?)

2). Nobody as far as I know has asked for clarification about assassinations here in the U.S.....which I'm sure ARE OCCURRING...it's neatly left out leaving one to assume it only happens overseas since overseas was mentioned and domestic wasn't...this is the current form of tailoring language to lead one to false conclusions.

3). Barak Obama is signing these orders. You only get to get killed if he signs it....that's clear...but it should be clarified in case it's dog walker to the secretarial assistant of the  assistant secretary of defense.

4)These assassination squads will get better and better at assassinating people. A job I'm sure they enjoy. One that is exciting, adventurous and interesting. One day, and that day will come when the team has been broken up they will get together and lament about the good ole days and one of them in the midst of complaining about the current government or personal enemies will suggest that they do it again! ...and again and again.

This breeds assassination as an art form, as a way of life and as an occupation.

Cheney commanded an assassination team, (0.00 / 0)
and I think Hersh exposed it. Back 6 months ago, ancient history when assassination was 'not okay'. Assassination by the state was definitely wrong until Obama started doing it too. Now it's okay, not worth talking about.

Cheney....the man with the giant brain. (0.00 / 0)
Cheney is an another old soul. A wise man from Jackson hole wyoming who helped lead this country out of the horror of 911 or was it 411...?

In any case if your looking for a wise man....don't go to Jackson Hole Wyoming and ask them questions about La WHore Pakistan....they will get all confused.
