Maybe he'll misuse the word 'enormity' again (4.50 / 2)
and about 4 or 5 people on earth will have a good chuckle.

Or should I say his twentysomething speechwriters, verbally trained to the level of Sportscaster will misuse the word 'enormity' again.

"Unprecedented" (4.67 / 3)
We'll here that one at least a couple of times.

Won't be watching.  I prefer to read his speeches as to escape the hypnotic effect of his delivery and cadence.  They certainly don't read as well as they sound.  Rather typical and recycled, in fact.

Always prefer to read all speaches (5.00 / 1)
but yeah, he's especially bad.

Surely I have before? (5.00 / 1)
At any rate as it turns out the speech doesn't appear to be worth either listening to or reading.  Greenwald already provided the Cliff Notes version ("same as Bush").

Just finished reading Greenwald... (0.00 / 0)
...and I concur.  Tell me, is he less of a pwoggie these days?  He seems to be hitting the nail right on the head with uncanny regularity.  He's the first thing I read in the morning.

Obama Knows What He's Doing. Give him a Chance (4.80 / 5)
What a lot of people don't understand is Obama is actually withdrawing more troops by sending more troops.

The whole idea is to get as many U.S soliders out of Afghanistan as possible.

The best way to do that is to send more over there so the numbers of troops LEAVING will be greater.

Obama, I have read plans to start withdrawing troops in 2011. I think that's a great idea, a progressive idea and it shows he's a man of peace. By announcing a simultaneous increase in the number of troops and the certainty that they are already being sent, we can relax knowing that Obama is not some crook...liar who just says things and doesn't mean them. ....he's not going to renege on his promise to withdraw troops after he's increased their number....

He hasn't reneged yet on Iraq or Guantanamo....those troops and prisoners are being processed as we speak.

Besides I like the number 100,000....we'll have 100,000 in Iraq AND Afghanistan.

That shows committment.

Chris Mathews (5.00 / 1)
just referenced Moyers recently playing the passage in the old LBJ tapes where he's rationalizing the continuation of Vietnam ops by feigning concern over the morale of the native puppet troops.

Nice to note, but you can bet Matthews won't be mentioning this after tonight's speech, we'll only find him slobbering and sweating, as he always is when called upon after cocktail hour to work overtime.

Who's giving the Democratic rebuttal? (0.00 / 0)
Oops...Obama is the Democrat.
My bad.

As a conressman-at-large representing the whiteysphere, I am shocked (0.00 / 0)
and appalled that Obama is committing another 40,000 troop to Afghanistan. We should pull out and allow the Afghanistanis to continue pummeling and murdering each other without our assistance. We need to evacuate and allow a safe haven for the retreating Talibani insurgents who require a place to regroup after they are kicked out of one side of the border or another in an endless game of hopscotch whose ultimate goal is the re-establishment of wholesome Talibani principles in Afghanistan, and possession of the advanced Pakastani nukular technology which they will use to reduce global warming.

Gay Afghanis and Pakastanis will be given marital wrights and "don't ask donn't tell" policies will be immediately abolished within all militia groups.

Here is a list of the enlightened social policies we in the whiteysphere support for both Afghanistan and Pakastan:

"The following list offers only an abbreviated glimpse of the hellish lives Afghan women are forced to lead under the Taliban, and can not begin to reflect the depth of female deprivations and sufferings. Taliban treat women worse than they treat animals. In fact, even as Taliban declare the keeping of caged birds and animals illegal, they imprison Afghan women within the four walls of their own houses. Women have no importance in Taliban eyes unless they are occupied producing children, satisfying male sexual needs or attending to the drudgery of daily housework. Jehadi fundamentalists such as Gulbaddin, Rabbani, Masood, Sayyaf, Khalili, Akbari, Mazari and their co-criminal Dostum have committed the most treacherous and filthy crimes against Afghan women. And as more areas come under Taliban control, even if the number of rapes and murders perpetrated against women falls, Taliban restrictions --comparable to those from the middle ages-- will continue to kill the spirit of our people while depriving them of a humane existence. We consider Taliban more treacherous and ignorant than Jehadis. According to our people, "Jehadis were killing us with guns and swords but Taliban are killing us with cotton." "

---RAWA

1- Complete ban on women's work outside the home, which also applies to female teachers, engineers and most professionals. Only a few female doctors and nurses are allowed to work in some hospitals in Kabul.

2- Complete ban on women's activity outside the home unless accompanied by a mahram (close male relative such as a father, brother or husband).

3- Ban on women dealing with male shopkeepers.

4- Ban on women being treated by male doctors.

5- Ban on women studying at schools, universities or any other educational institution. (Taliban have converted girls' schools into religious seminaries.)

6- Requirement that women wear a long veil (Burqa), which covers them from head to toe.

7- Whipping, beating and verbal abuse of women not clothed in accordance with Taliban rules, or of women unaccompanied by a mahram.

8- Whipping of women in public for having non-covered ankles.

9- Public stoning of women accused of having sex outside marriage. (A number of lovers are stoned to death under this rule).

10- Ban on the use of cosmetics. (Many women with painted nails have had fingers cut off).

11- Ban on women talking or shaking hands with non-mahram males.

12- Ban on women laughing loudly. (No stranger should hear a woman's voice).

13- Ban on women wearing high heel shoes, which would produce sound while walking. (A man must not hear a woman's footsteps.)

14- Ban on women riding in a taxi without a mahram.

15- Ban on women's presence in radio, television or public gatherings of any kind.

16- Ban on women playing sports or entering a sport center or club.

17- Ban on women riding bicycles or motorcycles, even with their mahrams.

18- Ban on women's wearing brightly colored clothes. In Taliban terms, these are "sexually attracting colors."

19- Ban on women gathering for festive occasions such as the Eids, or for any recreational purpose.

20- Ban on women washing clothes next to rivers or in a public place.

21- Modification of all place names including the word "women." For example, "women's garden" has been renamed "spring garden".

22- Ban on women appearing on the balconies of their apartments or houses.

23- Compulsory painting of all windows, so women can not be seen from outside their homes.

24- Ban on male tailors taking women's measurements or sewing women's clothes.

25- Ban on female public baths.

26- Ban on males and females traveling on the same bus. Public buses have now been designated "males only" (or "females only").

27- Ban on flared (wide) pant-legs, even under a burqa.

28- Ban on the photographing or filming of women.

29- Ban on women's pictures printed in newspapers and books, or hung on the walls of houses and shops.

Apart from the above restrictions on women, the Taliban has:

- Banned listening to music, not only for women but men as well.

- Banned the watching of movies, television and videos, for everyone.

- Banned celebrating the traditional new year (Nowroz) on March 21. The Taliban has proclaimed the holiday un-Islamic.

- Disavowed Labor Day (May 1st), because it is deemed a "communist" holiday.

- Ordered that all people with non-Islamic names change them to Islamic ones.

- Forced haircuts upon Afghan youth.

- Ordered that men wear Islamic clothes and a cap.

- Ordered that men not shave or trim their beards, which should grow long enough to protrude from a fist clasped at the point of the chin.

- Ordered that all people attend prayers in mosques five times daily.

- Banned the keeping of pigeons and playing with the birds, describing it as un-Islamic. The violators will be imprisoned and the birds shall be killed. The kite flying has also been stopped.

- Ordered all onlookers, while encouraging the sportsmen, to chant Allah-o-Akbar (God is great) and refrain from clapping.

- Ban on certain games including kite flying which is "un-Islamic" according to Taliban.

- Anyone who carries objectionable literature will be executed.

- Anyone who converts from Islam to any other religion will be executed.

- All boy students must wear turbans. They say "No turban, no education".

- Non-Muslim minorities must distinct badge or stitch a yellow cloth onto their dress to be differentiated from the majority Muslim population. Just like what did Nazis with Jews.

- Banned the use of the internet by both ordinary Afghans and foreigners.

Unfortunately, the invasion of SA has been delayed because we still need their oil.  The Whiteysphere's Minister of Conspiratorial Scientism, Blues, hasn't yet delivered on his promise of "Moron Fusion", whereby we can lubricate the engines of kkkapitalism with hydrogen peroxide. An added benefit of this innovative technology is that we will also be able to safely disinfect minor cuts and scrapes without resorting to iodine, which stings like hell!

Minister Blues has been given the following ultimatum by the PTB:

1. Produce a kiloton alternative disinfectant by the time we withdraw all troops from Afghanistan in 2011 or face death by stoning in the pubic square

2. Increase Tee Shirt sales by 666% during the holiday season or face expulsion from the Knights Templar.

Thank you and G'night.

We consider Taliban more treacherous and ignorant than Jehadis. According to our people, "Jehadis were killing us with guns and swords but Taliban are killing us with cotton.

Here's another, from Seymour Hersh in New Yorker, flatly contradicting yur usual wishin and hopin islamic propaganda that the Taliban will become kinder and gentler next time around:

Rahimullah Yusufzai, an eminent Pakistani journalist, who has twice interviewed Osama bin Laden, had a different explanation for the conditions that led to the offensive. "The Taliban were initially trying to win public support in Swat by delivering justice and peace," Yusufzai said. "But when they got into power they went crazy and became brutal. Many are from the lowest ranks of society, and they began killing and terrorizing their opponents."

I guess if I read the news 3 years watered down I might believe this 'proof' too (0.00 / 0)
The fact is Swat people were easy marks for Pak/US military. When the fighting first broke out it wasn't after the Taliban 'got into power', that's total bs. Back then when the first drones and bombs were being called in the propaganda line was 'Taliban sympathizers' 'Taliban-like' and other nonsense terms that evolved into this current fairy story of the Taliban holding Swat down since 2007 or W  T  F.

What's happened since is what always happens after we invade, sell-outs become revenge targets to the locals - Taliban or no...that doesn't matter anyway. If you hadn't heard we're into conquering the 'mountainous regions'.

Apart from dKos, Booman and some other jingoistic assholes the reaction seems to be against Obama.  Nevertheless you search the commentaries of such "progressives" as the folks at OpenLeft, Hullabaloo, FDL etc in vain for words like "crime", "genocide", "murder", "war criminal", "racist", "Nuremberg" or "international law".

Instead about the best you got was stuff like, "embarassment", "Bush", "Afghan people", "quagmire", "blood and treasure", "mission creep".

Save our Drones (4.60 / 5)
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

A Daily Kos Poster Aarujo is being depolyed to Afghanistan to get the job done. And I applaud this brave young fighting man or woman who has the guts to do something for his country, to protect it's freedom from those who wish us ill.
My main concern however is the safety of our drones. These incredible machines do the work of our brave young fighting men or women, protecting them day in and day out from the heat of battle.

Two days ago one of our drones was shot down in Afghanistan. There was almost no reporting done. There is no ceremony, there is no funeral, there are not letters or medals that are awarded our drones.

They just do their job. And some of them never make it back. They are regarded as "things".

They are not things, they are drones and whether they are made out of metal or flesh, shouldn't matter. They are protecting our soldiers from AL Queda.

I would ask this poster Aarujo to do something for the drones. We need to raise our conciousness about them. Some of them need a little more oil, or a paint job, or just a name emblazoned across their nose. Anything anyone here can donate to extend the life of these fantastic creations would be appreciated, I'm sure by the drone community.

It could make all the difference in the world.

Save our drones.

Greenwald praises Obama for not caring about Afghans (4.00 / 1)
I kid you not.  This is more of Greenwald's famous "balance" that says you have to praise war criminals for something or you're not balanced.

http://www.salon.com/news/opin...

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it", Helen Keller, communist.

That's not what he said. (0.00 / 0)
He said that while he unequivocally disagrees with Obama's Afghanistan escalation and fearmongering, he is at least happy that he has dropped the pretense of previous administrations' human rights propaganda wrt waging war and thereby removed the cover that liberal hawks once enjoyed to justify the unjustifiable.

[ Parent ]
First of all Obama didn't do that (3.00 / 1)
At least nobody else seems to think he did.  At the best Greenwald is clutching at straws and molehills.  I haven't bothered to read any of it but I can guarantee Obama didn't even come close to repudiating the humanitarian war propaganda angle.  Even Greenwald says something like that he didn't mention it "much".

Secondly and ignoring the fact that it never happened if it had happened what is that to Obama's credit?  And why would liberal hawks care?

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it", Helen Keller, communist.

Obama is fecal. (4.67 / 3)
Greenwald is promoting confusion. This kind of "anaylsis of the fecal material" Obama is dropping is unnecessary. It's Shit. Shit is shit. You don't stand around analyzing shit. You walk away from shit.

Greenwald is full of shit and hopelessly confused.

Obama is a killer. And killing for no reason. Even the dummy CIA says there is only 100 Al Queda...(whatever that is) in Afghanistan....yet Obama refers to Al Queda.

I mean this is just stupid. It's stupid shit. It's crazy. It's confusion built upon confusion, it's idiotic...

THis is a person who keeps trying to open a door but refuses to use a door knob.

The response for Obama's speech further demonstrates the utter stupidity of the American people.

In 2006....before I think he would announce his candidacy I wrote a diary about Obama saying he was pro war.

How could I become such a sage?

I listened to what he was saying, I was not looking at the color of his skin from the eyes of liberal wannabe.

He's a monster. He's a killer. He fecal material.

[ Parent ]
Honestly? Greenwald made his name from shit. (4.00 / 2)

What a sad 'commendable' move it is. (0.00 / 0)
To appeal to American narcissism rather than American do-gooder-ism, which is obviously the focus-group-tested right move in this pretty tired, pissed off and economically fucked up country.

But 4ked is correct, Greenwald is not praising Obama for not caring about Afghans, but for stating the truth that the war is carried out to advance U.S. interests. This is a step closer to "who's interests are those, they sure ain't mine" than the "do-gooder" confusion.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness, For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people, For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. -- A-Hep

Focus tested, right (3.00 / 1)
I bet I know why.  Telling Americans that you're spending billions of dollars their money on "helping" Afghans isn't going to fly so well when everyone's scared shitless that they'll lose their job and their house.  That just provokes a reaction of, "What about spending money on US??"

That's all it is.  A slight modification of the spiel to suit the popular temperment.

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it", Helen Keller, communist.

[ Parent ]
What about us. (0.00 / 0)
We need jobs more than we need to help Afghans.
Lets get our country put back together and then think about helping someone who will not help themselves.
Give the small companies sone tax breaks and then you will see people starting to work again

[ Parent ]
Very interesting, blindman! (0.00 / 0)
What tax breaks do you see creating jobs that haven't already been created? How?

Haven't companies been enjoying tax breaks through the Republican administrations, and shouldn't those jobs be showing up now? Or was that party's devotion to the cause of free enterprise false on its face?

Of course, "helping" Afghans is indeed a job for many forgotten Americans, once known as soldiers, now facelessly known as "troops." So: How do you suggest that they find employment upon their return? All in the interest of "supporting our troops," of course.

Will you guarantee your corporate solution to them? Individually?

[ Parent ]
Tax breaks don't work (4.00 / 1)
The problem for the small business isn't lack of cash but lack of customers.  Let's say the tax break is for employing a new worker.  OK that means it is cheaper but still why get a new employee when you haven't sufficient work for the employees you already have?  If the customers were liming up you'd want a new employee but then you'd pay for it with or without a tax break.

In other words you can't get out of a recession by boosting production rather you need to boost demand.  You do that by putting money into the hands of the consumer not the rich.  And the best way to put money into the hands of the consumer is employ them directly (and so you get something back for the money).

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it", Helen Keller, communist.

[ Parent ]
The Afghans _are_ helping themselves (0.00 / 0)
In order for Afghanistan to help itself it needs to be sovereign rather than a U.S. neocolony. So, Afghans are killing and otherwise making life miserable for the American occupiers.
