(Reuters) - Syria's conflict spilled further into Lebanon on Saturday when mortar fire from President Bashar al-Assad's forces hit villages in the north, killing five people after rebels crossed the border to seek refuge, residents said.

Rebels fighting to unseat Assad have used north Lebanon as a base and his forces have at times bombed villages and even pursued insurgents over the border, threatening to stoke tension in Lebanon, whose sectarian rifts mirror those in Syria.

Residents of Lebanon's Wadi Khaled region said several mortar bombs hit farm buildings five to 20 km (3 to 12 miles) from the border at around 2 a.m. At midday villagers reported more explosions and said they heard gunfire close to the border.

In the village of al-Mahatta, a house was destroyed, killing a 16-year-old girl and wounding a two-year old and a four-year old, family members told Reuters. A 25-year-old woman and a man were killed in nearby villages, residents said.

Two Bedouins were killed in the village of Hishe, which straddles a river demarcating the border, when two rocket-propelled grenades fired from within Syria hit their tent, according to local residents.

Lebanon's army confirmed one of the deaths and said several Syrian shells had landed in Lebanese territory, but had no further information. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman issued a statement regretting the deaths and promising an investigation.

We just learned that the cat we have had the pleasure of knowing since our twins were in first grade now has lymphoma.  Our "children" just graduated high school. He was there the whole way.  Eleven to twelve years is a long time in human life - in our children's case, from learning of one's own life to conceiving of another's mortality.

Growing up, I never had pets other than tropical fish.  Thus, I would never have had any idea.  Please accept my belated condolences and my apologies on behalf of those like my former self, who still have no idea.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has accused the former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice of fabricating a crucial conversation between them that she quoted in her memoirs, concerning his failure to accept prime minister Ehud Olmert's 2008 peace offer.

In her book "No Higher Honor" published last year, Rice describes how she traveled to Ramallah in May 2008 and "sketched out the details" of Olmert's offer, which covered West Bank territorial arrangements, security issues, the division of Jerusalem, and a proposal regarding Palestinian refugees that provided for a very limited number to enter Israel. Abbas started negotiating immediately, she wrote, and she quoted him saying: "I can't tell four million Palestinians that only five thousand of them can go home."

In an interview broadcast Saturday night on Israel's Channel 2 news, however, Abbas flatly denied saying anything of the kind. Indeed, he said no such conversation took place.

Asked about the "four million" comment, he said, "I absolutely did not say that."

Was the secretary lying, the interviewer asked? "I'm not calling her a liar," Abbas responded. "I am saying that we never had that conversation."

Similarly, in the same interview, Abbas denied making another key comment relating to the Olmert proposal, in this case to the Washington Post journalist Jackson Diehl. In a May 2009 interview with Abbas, Diehl quoted the PA leader as saying, of the Olmert offer, that "the gaps were wide."

"I didn't say that," Abbas said in the Channel 2 interview.

Abbas told Channel 2 he wanted to advance peace efforts with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and strongly believed in peace. He ducked a direct question on whether he was ready to sign an "end of conflict" accord, but said he would resort to UN recognition of Palestine only if there was "no diplomatic horizon" and stressed that he was "not issuing ultimatums."

He said he had no preconditions for talks with Netanyahu, but at the same time demanded the release of 123 prisoners jailed by Israel since before the Oslo process began, and said he shared the stance of the "whole world" in demanding a halt to settlement expansion.

He said the "true" Palestinian refugee numbers were that 950,000 had lost their homes when Israel was established, according to UNRWA, and that there were now five million refugees "and I'm one of them." He urged Netanyahu: "Let's discuss it. Let's solve it together."

Asked whether settlers who wished to do so would be able to remain inside a Palestinian state, Abbas first said this would be a function of the "land swaps" involved in an accord, but then added, "I don't oppose any Jew who wants to live with me."

Abbas, in the interview, also ruled out the possibility of another "armed intifada." And asked, in the context of the rise of Islamist movements in the region, whether he feared a Hamas victory in the next elections, he said, "If that is the will of the people, I will accept it."

In response to Abbas's comments on the peace process, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement: "Till now, Abbas never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Even after PM Netanyahu made unprecedented steps such as freezing construction in the settlements, Abbas kept on refusing to hold talks. Even now, PM Netanyahu calls upon president Abbas to meet soon in order to promote the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians."

Millions will participate in events spanning five continents, from concerts in London to a film festival in Beirut to a bike race in Ecuador. Yet mention of one group of refugees will be noticeably absent from any of these activities: the 850,000 Jews expelled from Arab countries during the past six decades. Their history remains one of the 20th century's greatest untold stories.

At the end of World War II, 850,000 Jews lived in Arab countries. Just 8,500 remain today. Their departure was no accident. After Arab leaders failed to annihilate Israel militarily in 1948, they launched a war of terror, incitement, and expulsion to decimate their own ancient Jewish communities.

In Iraq Jewish businessman Shafiq Adas, then the country's wealthiest citizen, was immediately arrested on trumped-up charges and publicly lynched. This was followed by bombings targeting Jewish institutions, arbitrary arrests of Jewish leaders, and massive government seizures of property. Within years virtually all of Iraq's 2,500-year-old Jewish community had fled, emptying the country of many of its greatest artists, musicians, and businessmen.

Similar scenes played out across the region, from Egypt to Syria to Libya to Yemen. State-sanctioned pogroms descended on Jewish neighborhoods, killing innocents and destroying ancient synagogues and Jewish cemeteries. New, draconian laws prevented Jews from public worship, forced them to carry Jewish identity cards, and seized billions of dollars in their property and assets. The total area of land confiscated from Jews in Arab countries amounts to nearly 40,000 square miles -- about five times the size of Israel's entire land mass.

The vast majority of these Jewish refugees came to Israel, nearly doubling its population. Most entered the Land of Milk and Honey with no milk, no honey, and no money. They were embraced with full citizenship rights and ambitious programs for integration, rising to the highest levels of society.

The years have passed, but the injustice inflicted upon these Jewish refugees continues. Many around the world have remained silent and complicit as Arab governments have sought to erase all memory of their stories.

Nowhere is this revisionist history clearer than in the halls of the United Nations. Year after year Palestinian refugees attract more attention and resources at the U.N. than Britney Spears at a paparazzi convention, yet not a single syllable about the Jewish refugees expelled from Arab countries can be found in any of the 1,088 U.N. resolutions on the Middle East or the 172 U.N. resolutions dedicated to Palestinian refugees.

While Arab leaders have found a refuge from reality at the U.N., they have been unable to outrun the consequences of religious and sectarian persecution, incitement, and violence at home. In the rubble of Aleppo's former Jewish neighborhoods, Assad's Allawite-led regime continues to brutally suppress Syria's Sunni-led uprising. In Egypt mobs burn Coptic Christian churches in the same way that they attacked synagogues years ago. In Baghdad, where Jews once constituted a third of the population, Sunnis and Shiites remain pitted against each other after years of bloodshed.

Forging a peaceful future in the Middle East will require Arab governments to finally learn the lessons of their pasts. They must build inclusive societies that protect minorities and offer everyone a seat at the decision-making table.

The first steps toward true pluralism will come when Arab countries acknowledge the history of persecution and intolerance in their own lands. They should start by unearthing the 850,000 untold stories of Jews ripped from their ancient homes.

The historic Jewish presence in the Arab World must be recognized. The grave injustices inflicted upon them must be acknowledged. The crimes committed against them must be rectified.

I started getting into it around 2006, not sure exact dates. Uhm. I posted first consistently at Huffington Post, before one needed to register.

The plamegate stuff was hittting a climax ony to as you know result in another dud for justice.

All the best stuff seemed to go on before then, at least for Meta. Thus one needed to dive into forum archives to get a feel for what this is all about. That's what I did.

That was around the time Markos outed himself as CIA loving. There was the Netvocates story and other astroturfing shites also got busted. I actually then got away from the political slant and studied weather mitigation. Only to be drawn back into wondering wtf was up with the internet.

The word chemtrails is a bad one cause it distorts what's really going on. I actually proved not all contrails are contrails. But the convolution got laid down so thick like fake clouds, most people are probably ashamed to admit they too think something fishy is going on up there.

The word rancor says it all. People can't debate their points without getting sadistic. It's not only a Daily Kos thing. Too bad the people who branched off of Daily Kos are as sadistic as those who are DKos. That's why the internet sucks. There are too many donkeytales and Nooms. Even Laura and Fairleft have their sadistic moments. This blog is doomed, and I suspect Laura will at some point stop coughing up the $15 per month or whatever it is.

Let me come back to that and just make one more point, which is that in the past weeks, I had learned of a major exodus of key staffers at Al-Akhbar over the Syrian issue. This issue exploded right after I joined Al-Akhbar to write about Israel-Palestine and to cover foreign-policy debates in Washington. So Syria wasn't my beat. The Arab world wasn't my beat. I didn't really anticipate writing about it or discussing it on the website. But the conflict over Syria has divided the Lebanese left. And so the debates at Al-Akhbar really reflected the debates inside the Lebanese left. And what it came to by this spring, apparently, was that the pro-Assad faction, which saw him and his regime as an anti-imperialist bulwark, had more or less won out, although some dissident voices remain.

It doesn't make him a legitimate anti-imperial figure. He's always being a self-interested autocrat. His regime has in fact offered negotiations with Israel with no preconditions. They allowed the U.S. to render terror suspects, including those who appeared to be completely innocent, to Syria for torture. You know. And at the same time-.

I remember one of those safe havens was in al Sukariya in Abu Kamal. The Americans raided it [in 2008] and captured prisoners.  This was a hiding place for Al Qaeda on the border with Iraq. And it was under the control of Assif Shawkat, the brother in law of the president.

WATSON: You saw with your own eyes that Assif Shawkat was leading this Al Qaeda in Iraq operation?

FARES:  One hour after the raid, Assif Shawkat was there at the location.  A conversation took place between me and him... And he was angry about the attack made against Al Sukariya, and he was kind of scared.

The Al Qaeda in Syria and the one that worked in Iraq have a strong relationship with Bashar al Assad.  But he scares the West by showing them that the only successor to the regime in Syria would be Al Qaeda.  And he scares the Syrian people that if he leaves, Al Qaeda will come.

A former general of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards has accused the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of having blood on his hands over the brutal crackdown on the opposition, and described government claims that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful as a "sheer lie".

In a letter to prominent opposition activist Mohammad Nourizad (website in Farsi), the former officer gives a rare glimpse of political dissent within the ranks of the elite force in charge of the nuclear programme and Khamenei's personal security.

Identified only by his initials, the general says that he and a number of his colleagues were threatened with execution for disloyalty and then - after a series of secret courts-martial - dismissed "because we refused to participate in the betrayals and the crimes committed by our seniors".

I'm writing this letter to you to tell our people that there are still many generals and members of staff within the Revolutionary Guards who are opposed to these crimes and are waiting to join the people, the letter reads.

Speaking to the Guardian by telephone from Tehran, Nourizad - who published the general's letter on his website - said he was convinced of its authenticity because it was handed to him in person by the former general.

"This is one of the many such letters written by senior figures within the Sepah [Revolutionary Guards] that I have received. I have refrained from publishing many of them because I was worried they might pose security problems," said Nourizad.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards are an elite force separate from the Iranian army and under the direct command of the country's supreme leader. The corps was founded to protect Iran's revolutionary values, but has become increasingly involved in politics and business.

In the aftermath of the fiercely disputed 2009 elections, several dozen Revolutionary Guards generals, as well as senior figures in the informal voluntary Basij militia, were replaced for refusing to use violence against unarmed protesters.

According to the general, the order to open fire on the protesters came from the top. "[In 2009,] the leader [Khamenei] asked Rahim Safavi [a former chief commander of the guards] whether he would be prepared to run over people with tanks if they took to streets to revolt. He said yes and the leader gave him the order," he writes.

They shut our mouth for years by saying that the leader wanted this or that ... But we could no more keep it shut after the post-election bloodshed. This was the point many spoke out or simply refused to comply.

According to the general, Khamenei was also personally involved in the restrictions imposed on the opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, who is still under house arrest with little access to the outside world. "How can a supreme leader with blood on his hands be close to God?," he asks.

The general also accuses Khamenei of lying about Iran's nuclear programme, which is now subject to an international dispute, the general casts doubt on what the regime officials claim to be "peaceful" activities, describing them as the country's "nuclear gamble".

"The inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency are fooling themselves if they believe that the nuclear facilities on and under the ground are only for peaceful purposes," he writes. "The leader said [in a fatwa] that Iran has only peaceful intentions with its nuclear activities. This is a sheer lie."

"We undertook this nuclear gamble with the leader's knowledge - that's why we are paying billions of dollars into Chinese and Russian bank accounts so that they support us in international negotiations and we could find a way out of this stalemate." Opposition activists often accuse the Iranian government of securing political support from China and Russia with preferential oil contracts and business opportunities.
